Miracle Worker and Rattlesnake Tour

When you’re ready for a fun day trip, give this one a try… (Remember, all of our tours start from Columbia, Tennessee, so if you’re not from the Dimple of the Universe, you’ll need to recalculate your directions.)

Travel to Mt. Pleasant and hop on Hwy. 43 South. Your destination is “The Heart of Dixie” – Alabama.

Before you reach the state line, there’s a great place you need to stop.

Stop #1: Old School Antiques, St. Joseph, TN.

You’ll see plenty of signs advertising for Old School Antiques as you get close to St. Joe. It’s worth the stop. There you’ll be able to shop over 10,000 square feet of antiques in a historic building. If Bob Moore is working, schedule a little extra time to talk shop… or baseball.

Once finished, get back on 43 South. You’re not far from the state line.

Merge onto Hwy 72 and follow it to Florence. From Killen to Florence, there are several great antique stores to visit. The same goes for Sheffield, Tuscumbia, and Muscle Shoals. Muscle Shoals has long been known for its happening music scene. FAME Studio is open for tours throughout the week if you’d like to learn more about the music history of the Shoals.

The tour I want you to take, though, is in Tuscumbia.

Stop #2: Ivy Green—the Helen Keller Birthplace, Tuscumbia, AL.

Ivy Green was built in 1820. In 1880 Helen Keller was born at this Tuscumbia home. From this tour you will learn the dramatic life story of Helen Keller and the “Miracle Worker” that taught her to read and speak. The well—where Helen first learned the word “water”—is still on the property and makes for a great photo opportunity.

After the tour, it should be time to eat. Just outside of Tuscumbia is a unique dining experience you should really try.

Stop #3: The Rattlesnake Saloon, Mount Mills Road, Tuscumbia, AL.

Park in the gravel lot and wait on your ride. You’ll need it for where you are going—and that is through the woods and down the hillside to a picturesque cave and waterfall. Hopefully you’ll have your choice of tables in the cave and you can enjoy your lunch with the sound of falling water as your background music. After 5pm, they begin serving beer and playing live music.

After lunch, catch a lift back up the hill and be sure to stop by the gift shop for your Rattlesnake Saloon merchandise. Now is the time to either head home or go explore some places on your own.
